On one level, this phenomenon is understandable: People are frustrated and frightened by the pandemic, explains Dana Dorfman, PhD, a New York City–based psychotherapist. “The COVID-19 pandemic offers endless opportunities for vulnerability, engendering feelings of insecurity, fear, and loss of control,” she says. “We are anxious about the virus’s invisibility, its potential effects, and high transmission rates. And we fear infection, illness, and loss of life — our own and others.”
