Anxiety Reaction Types @ Work Quiz by Dr. Dana Dorfman

Dr. Dana Dorfman, MSW, PhD, author of When Worry Works, has 25 years of clinical experience treating children, adolescents, parents and adults. She created the Anxiety Reaction Types (ART) framework to identify the unconscious ways that anxiety can manifest in our lives, including at work.

No ART is better or worse than the other. They’re built to offer a different perspective on yourself (and your coworkers) and to improve your relationship with your work. The ART quiz is designed to help us shift our professional decisions to better align with our values, rather than reacting to our fears.

Dr. Dorfman originally created this framework from her research on parenting anxiety and adapted it for the different ways anxiety manifests in our work. We all have anxiety at various points in our lives; it’s ever-present and operates to varying degrees. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it hinders.

Our ways of managing anxiety are based on heredity, life experiences, and temperament—and often, we’re not aware that it’s even present. When we’re aware of our ARTs, we can take control of our anxieties and use them to benefit ourselves and our work. Take the quiz to find out your Anxiety Reaction Types @ Work!

What to know before you take it:

  • The quiz is free and your answers are confidential.
  • It should take you about 20 minutes to complete.
  • As you explore your results, you’ll likely identify with one or more of the ARTs.
  • Consider them as frameworks for understanding rather than rigid molds that can help you make small changes with a large impact on your trajectory and mental health.

Instructions:

Read the 16 questions and select the answer that seems most generally true for you. (You can go back and select a different answer.) If none of the situations are relevant or applicable, then choose the answer you’d most likely do or say.

The results will reveal your predominant Anxiety Reaction Types @ Work and what you can do next. (Most of us are a blend!)
